Behind the Scenes with Better Life June 2019

Getting Ready for Graduation

June, the month known for academic graduations! After spending years learning facts, taking tests, and practicing the knowledge acquired, students finally mark the end of their studies by graduating. It’s an exciting time for both students and their families. Graduation is just one of the milestones we achieve during our lives; it both acknowledges achievement and marks a transition to something greater, like the beginning of a career.

Light years beyond academic graduation is another type of graduation of which we can each be a part. The apostle Paul talked about it using the metaphor of running a race, but we’re really talking about the same thing; putting everything on the line with the single-hearted purpose of achieving eternal life in Christ at the second coming. This is the graduation that counts!

God has done many things through the ministry of Better Life. The most wonderful thing, though, is the preparation of souls for the most important graduation of all – the graduation that will happen when Christ comes again! What earthly work could be more important or more honorable?

Inside this newsletter, you’ll find the story of a lady named Dawn who came back to the Lord through the ministry of Better Life. Sadly, Dawn passed away in May of this year, but we are happy to report that she was ready to graduate! As her life came to an end, she put her faith in Jesus the Redeemer. If there had been no Better Life, who knows how Dawn’s story might have ended? Please be sure to read her story inside.

I think it’s so loving of God to have raised up Better Life in these last days to be a beacon that calls people to prepare for graduating into heaven. Twenty four hours a day, seven days a week, messages of hope, health and salvation stream out across the West Coast and beyond from a humble ministry in Grants Pass, Oregon.

From time to time the Lord lifts the veil, and we see how He is working on the hearts of our viewers. Just the other day we got a call from a lady in Ashland who told us that, although she isn’t an Adventist, she likes to watch Better Life; she saw an episode of Better Life Today where we told a story of a witch whose hand was burned when she touched the book, “The Great Controversy.” This lady called us because she wanted a copy of that book to see what it said for herself! She also asked for the book “Steps to Christ.”

Friends, Better Life broadcasts messages of hope day and night, sends out Christ-centered literature, and connects with people’s hearts because of your faithfulness and God’s providence. We are so thankful for your continued partnership - through prayer, financial support, and sharing with others how Better Life has blessed you. This support provides the vehicle that moves us ever forward in evangelism, and enables you to reach out to precious souls just as if you yourself were sitting with them, sharing your personal story of Christ’s saving grace. Thank you for walking with Better Life, and making this whole amazing thing possible! - CO

Meet the Better Life Team!

Charlie Oliver’s Dog Cora

Charlie Oliver’s Dog Cora

This month we want you to meet a very special member of our Better Life team... this is Cora, a 9 month old chocolate lab owned by our executive director, Charlie Oliver.

If you ever stop by our office there’s a good chance you’ll be able to see Cora. She’s very playful and has a special bright-eyed curiosity. She loves to come and greet the staff in the morning, so don’t be surprised if she’s anxious to meet you too!

Cora and animals like her are  just another wonderful way that God has shown His love to us. We can’t wait to see what He has in store for us in the New Earth!

God Knew She Would Return

Dawn had had a very hard life. Years of smoking and drugs had taken a toll on her health. She wasn’t even 60 yet but she was already dealing with things that typically affect those older.

Dawn had grown up in a Christian home, but for various reasons she left the church when young and went out to see what the world had to offer. But as is always the case, things didn’t work out well.

One time Dawn told her sister, “There’s no reason I should be alive today.” That’s because she had tried to commit suicide by taking an overdose of pills and alcohol. But thankfully she was unsuccessful. Dawn would later say that God didn’t let her die because He knew that she was going to give her heart back to Him.

Dawn began tuning in to Better Life and God touched her heart. She enjoyed watching Ken Cox, Doug Batchelor and Better Life Today.  Dawn didn’t attend a physical church; she would say that Better Life was her church.

Over time, she was impressed that she needed to be baptized, but unfortunately she didn’t get to see that happen. This past April she was told that she had terminal cancer and that she probably only had three months to live. She didn’t make it that long. We assured Dawn that God understood why she couldn’t be baptized and He could save her in spite of it like He did for the thief on the cross.

On May 11th, 2019, Dawn went to her rest. Before she passed, Better Life was able to arrange an anointing service for her with the Springfield SDA church. Dawn told her sister that if this had happened to her three years ago she would have been freaking out. But now, she was at peace. She said, “I’m safe in Jesus. I’m going to be buried by my mom and we’ll go meet Jesus together at the resurrection.” Friends, your support helped to bring the blessed hope to this dear lady. I want you to meet her someday soon.

Thank you for supporting the outreach ministry of Better Life.

Layered Summer Salad

Contributed by Rosalie Hurd, Better Choices Cookbook, pg. 78

4 c (packed) baby spring greens

2 tomatoes, medium ripe, cut in wedges

1 cucumber, medium, cut in half circles

1 avocado, medium, ripe, cut in slices

1/2 red bell pepper cut in strips

12 medium black ripe olives

1/3 c fresh chopped parsley

1/4 raw pumpkin seeds

In a large shallow salad bowl, place a layer of baby spring greens. Carefully layer remaining ingredients, alternating colors and shapes to create a salad with lots of eye appeal. Serve with fresh squeezed lemon or your favoirte dressing. Serves 4.

Note: Freshly squeezed lemon juice improves the flavor of green leafy vegetables and reduced the amount of salt needed to season greens.  The vitamin C in lemons prevents oxidation and enhances the absorption of iron in vegetables.
